Understanding Wood

Wood is a natural substrate, and will have variations in color, grain, appearance, and other natural characteristics that make each piece unique. Our style and design process emphasizes those variations and uniqueness, rather than obscuring those differences.

Each tree may come from a different climate, and the resulting timber is a naturally hydroscopic material that will often lose or absorb moisture as it climatizes and adapts to a new surrounding. This can cause perceptible “movement” as the material adapts to the temperature and humidity throughout the seasons, and this is normal behavior. All wood we use is sourced from the best hardwood and live edge slab dealers in America, and is always properly kiln dried, which helps limit movement in the wood over the long term.

Wood Selection

In choosing materials for your project, we can help select woods that will meet your expectations. We usually counsel against using chemical stains of any kind in our workshop, and instead use a variety of hardwood species that will yield the colors you are inspired by for your spaces. If a darker color is desired, this means starting with a darker wood such as Walnut, Bubinga, Mahogany, Wenge, Sapele, etc. If a lighter color is desired, this may mean starting with something like Maple, Ash, Birch, Butternut, White Oak, Beech, etc. We will work with you and can provide samples during the planning stages to dial in the right woods to help deliver the right colors to match your vision and design inspiration.

One of the reasons we generally counsel against using chemical stains to transform the color of the wood is for long term maintenance. We build pieces that are meant to last and be passed on, and spot fixes and refinishing are usually a part of long term maintenance of hardwood pieces. By focusing on the natural colors and avoiding stains, this takes the guesswork out of color matching and refinishing down the road. For furniture we most often use a natural blend of hardwax called Rubio MonoCoat, which is durable, easy to apply, and easy to maintain (as well as spot fix and refinish). More information on our finishing process can be found here.
